What is the meaning of IMD or Meteorological Department?


When Calcutta was badly damaged by a cyclone in 1864 and after the famines of 1866 and 1871, it was decided to organize meteorological analysis and collection work within a framework. Very soon after this, in 1875, the Indian Meteorological Department was established. Henry Francis Blanford was appointed as the department's first Meteorological Correspondent after it was established. It was then there, in May 1889, that Sir John Eliot was selected as the first Director General of Observatories in the then capital, Calcutta. First the headquarter of Meteorological Department was established in Shimla in 1905, then it was established in Pune in 1928 and now at present its headquarter has been shifted to New Delhi [2] Indian Meteorological Department after independence on 27 April 1949 Became a member of the World Meteorological Organization.
